Hero Poem by Amanda Marie Swiatek

Hero

The worst moments of my life
lying on the ground
staring at the sky
staring into your eyes
The places I go when I am
afraid
falling asleep in the enemies arms
the feelings of desperation
The moment I heard
I was a victim of your gang initiation
The words I never spoke to you
The love I never showed you
selfishness
weakness
powerless
I pray that I am not you
I pray that I never walk in your shoes
I do pray that you join me
as I learn to love and to speak
as I learn their anger does not include me
Happiness
The moment you pulled me out from underneath the desk
dancing with me
telling me to jump
A hero for the moment
