Hey Diddle Diddle Abridged Poem by Naomi Reed

Hey Diddle Diddle Abridged

Hey Diddle Diddle
The Cat and the Fiddle
The Cow jumped over the moon
With a scuff of her hoof
She made a running start
But the rancher stopped her, said 'Don't be a buffoon'

'Come down to the stable
Where the rancher is able
To provide you with work and reward'
With a promise of pastures
She soon followed after
The rancher, and was seen no more

She'd been fooled by his charm
For a bawn was the farm
With nary a bushel of brome
But she turned a blind eye
To the moon in the sky
As the silly, young heifer had hope

So she stayed for a little
While the Cat and the Fiddle
Played nocturnes to guide her back home
But here at the stable
Every creature obeys
No matter how brittle or broken your bones

When Bessie was told
That she was to be sold
She looked to the moon once more
But alas, she was spent
In her prison so pent
As she licked at the wounds she bore

With her udders dry
She lied down to die
But she could hear the Cat's violin
So with a scuff of her hoof
She made a running start
But rancher had stopped her again

Too weak to resist
She lies someone's dish
Only spoon to keep company
Hey Diddle Diddle
The Cat and the Fiddle
The Cow is no more than meat
