Hi. My Name Is Alcohol. Poem by Martin Arhin

Hi. My Name Is Alcohol.

Hi.
My name is alcohol. I am your friend.
I promise to be there when you have been abandoned.
I promise to be there when no one else is.
I will protect you from your pain.
I will protect you from yourself.
Let us not become strangers.
There's no need to drown in misery.
Take a sip of me and we will escape reality.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
As a third-year medical student doing emergency department shifts, I saw many patients that were diagnosed with alcohol use disorder. This caused me to wonder how people come to rely on alcohol and what causes them to return to drinking after successfully quitting. During my conversation with patients, I learned that at times, it was due to a lack of a social support system and a way to escape suffering and pain.
