Highest Rung Poem by Ian Clark

Highest Rung

What do you want from me

What do you need from me

How can I help you get to where

You have to be

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

What is your plan for me

What do you think of me

Is there something I can do

To set you free

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Youve held your hands around my neck

For as long, as my eyes can see

flushing out what little respect

I thought belonged to me

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

You Play your cards close to my chest

Till you strike your deal

To let me know how you know best

and What I should really feel

Where do I stand with you

Where do I sit with you

When all you want to do

Is cause me pain

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

How can I hold my own

Where can I be alone

With what you put me through

Time and time again

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

You've tied my hands around my back

For as long as I can remember

All You need is another white flag

Raised In all of its splender

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

With your toughened skin

Where you couldn't be stung

You want to take your place

On the highest rung

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

your words can alway run

where no one can tie your tongue

you love to sit on your perch

On the highest rung

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Climbing your ladder

You took the test

Just to see how far

You could beat the rest

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Your game of chance

Was to be the best

Without a second thought

This was your quest, to find success

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

How much can I give for you

How much can I live for you

Will I ever make the cut

To get a slice

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Does your heart bleed for me

When you squeeze the life from me

You're look chills my bones

With eyes as cold as ice

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

How can I set apart

How can I tell my heart

That the fear your surrounding

Is out to do me harm

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

when Will I recognise

the truth before my eyes

will I know when its time

to raise the alarm
