Him Poem by Zoe Adams

Him

Rating: 4.5

His were the arms that lifted me up,
And his that dropped me down,
His were the ones to hold me tight,
With my fingers knitted into his crown.

His were the eyes to make me fall,
And his to make me scared,
His were the ones to trick me,
Into thinking that he cared.

His was the heart that now lays still,
And his that held onto mine,
He was the one to teach me that,
That we are never 'fine'.

His were the hands that beat me,
And his that caressed my face,
His was the life that others think,
Was a complete and utter disgrace.

His was the mouth I remember,
Set into a tight smile,
Yet I recall having to,
To hold back foul bile.

For it was his smile in the summer,
Joyful and careless and free,
That I wish could replace that one,
When I close my eyes I see.

And though we lie together,
Now six feet under,
I can't help but notice,
That even with our blunder,

We loved each other always,
That I know to be true,
But it was drugs and alcohol,
That brought out the violence in you.

See, when you started drinking,
Something snapped inside,
And though try as you may,
It takes a whole lot to hide.

But now we really will be together,
For an eternity,
Because you were not waiting,
Where you said you'd be.

Yet, you came after a while,
Knife in your hand,
And you slit my throat,
My blood pouring across the land.

You stayed with me all that night,
Until it came to dawn,
When you shouted 'I made this mess,
But I cannot stand to mourn.'

And so you ended your life,
Like you ended mine,
Your life trickling out of you,
Dripping onto the vine.

And let this be a lesson learnt,
To any of whom may read,
That there is nothing more than love,
That you will truly need.

Though things may tempt you,
Money, riches, greed,
The more you have the harder it becomes,
To get enough to feed.

To feed the hunger inside you,
Crying out for more,
And even if you defeat it,
You'll be nothing like before.

When you had nothing but love,
And could survive on that,
Now you have nothing,
For your greed has made you fat.

It would've worn away,
But you killed us both instead,
And now we simply lie here,
In the ground. Dead.

COMMENTS OF THE POEM

Wow this is such a personal and powerful piece Zoe and there's so much hurt in your words. The sudden and abrupt ending is perfect and you've written from the heart here and that puts you beyond any kind of criticism. I think it's beautiful.
