How Does One Begin? Poem by xolisa stuurman

How Does One Begin?

How does one begin…?
Begin to move away from the things that do not best describe one.
Refrain from wearing the same shoes day in and out,
To a point where one lose realization of how small, big or weary the shoes have become.
For we walk uncomfortably to an extent where pain becomes bearable.
An abstract in life becomes acceptable due to lack of courage to begin moving away from things that take us away from us.
We confuse our conscious by giving in to experience,
Take journeys in directions that live us astray.
Roads too many have traveled with results that remain stationary.
Time rotate and earth is flat, that would never change, but we can.
Ability we do possess, that time nor could earth ever conceive.
Yet how does one begin…
Begin by remembering what one is about, because I believe we’re aware.
And need not to ignore pain for it is a symbol of resistance, resistance to change.
I can’t believe how many of us get caught up between these chains, building walls we can’t climb.
Succumb in misery we born to life and blame God.
How come we attach ourselves like skin is to a bone.
A form of art we create and destroy.
We abuse ourselves and find relief by taking our own lives into our hands.
A life given with grace, hope and joy.
Imagine his smile when he made u and me, the pride he took when his works were finally accomplished.
Yet, today we can’t trust the very same hands that made us.
Remember the beautiful thought …
In him I find the way to begin.
In me I find the way to put an end to my suffering.
