How I See Poem by Hayley K...

How I See

As I walk,
I just walk.
No more,
no less.
Except for two things,
I listen, and I see.

I listen to the peace,
I hear the silence,
I acknowledge the tranquility,
I see the world.

It's right after a rain,
everything is wet.
There are gray clouds in the sky,
the sun hardly shines through.
There's a clean, pleasant smell in the air,
the breeze is almost non-existent.

I can hear a single bird way up high in the tree ahead,
I can see a moth on a leaf.
I can feel the humidity licking my skin,
I can smell the flowers and grass.

As I look around,
I notice everything.
Because of the rain,
the tree trunks are a darker brown.
Their leaves are a darker green,
the grass is darker and softer to the touch.

The warm rays of the sun,
trickle down to the ground.
The dew drops suddenly visible,
Like little crystals everywhere.
taking in the light,
and reflecting it with thousands of tiny rainbows.

If I close my eyes,
I hear the branches groaning.
I listen to the leaves brushing together,
the flap of the birds wings.
I notice the rustling of dead leaves,
as squirrels scurry and build their nests.

I take the time to acknowledge,
the beauty around me.
Although this sounds like a dream,
it is real.

Behind me, my mom calls me in,
and I become aware of everything else.
There's a T.V. on in someone's living room,
there are electrical lines hanging above.
Just one hundred feet away, across the River Des Pares,
there's the honking of cars as they zoom past.

Both of these are reality,
only one can truly seem real.
I prefer the quieter one,
the one which was my backyard.
