This wistful poem of barely contained emotion reminds me of the many Chinese poems in which friends, being transferred around the vast Empire, must say FAREWELL forever. Your poem captures and sustains that moment Ezra Pound translated some of these SEPARATION POEMS vividly. I have loved these lines he translated from a poem by Li Po for over 50 years: AND IF YOU ASK ME HOW I REGRET THIS PARTING: /IT IS LIKE THE FLOWERS FALLING AT SPRING'S END/CONFUSED, IN A TANGLE./WHAT IS THE USE OF TALKING, AND THERE IS NO END OF TALKING./THERE IS NO END OF THINGS IN THE HEART. That is pitched so perfectly - deep emotion but no sentimentality, the heart's unadorned truth.
