How To Fill A Heart Poem by Martin Rini

When you are single and not dating anyone,
Your heart is already half-full.

So, how does it become completely full?
Is it another person that makes your heart feel full?

Or, just because you feel your heart is full,
Does that mean that it truly is?

I feel that the only way to have a full-heart is by loving yourself,
Even before loving any other person.

You have to be one with yourself
Before you can give yourself to someone else.

Being single or not, you can fill your heart any time you are ready to accept yourself.

You have to be ready to accept yourself.
You have to be ready in every way to love yourself.

You have to make a sacrifice to make yourself whole,
And making yourself whole is one step towards loving yourself.

What else can you do to love yourself?
Poets have questioned that for years
And will do so for many years to come.

In the meantime, we can love ourselves and become full,
Or remain half-full looking for another to give us
What they themselves are seeking.

I believe that true love arises not out of one's emptiness,
Or out of one's half-fullness.
But, rather, I believe that true love comes from the abundance
Welling up inside one's own life, filling up one's own heart,
And spilling over into another's.
