How Went The Day? The Day Went Well Poem by Marion Sharville

How Went The Day? The Day Went Well

The sun bade me stir, with a finger of gold
touching my eyelid. Come! Wake up to the world.
I viewed the prospect with half-opened eyes
but my ancient bones were reluctant to rise.
Still, I opened the window to hear the dawn chorus,
a performance I feel, is put on just for us
to start on a good note. What’s in store? We can’t tell.

How went the day?
The day went well.

It followed the ritual of my every day
but a passing stranger had wished me “Good-day”
Then, after hanging the washing to dry,
another small gift, when a huge butterfly
decided to land on my hand and stay still,
its beauty up close, to be savoured … a thrill!

I like washing up, time to think and to dream.
I will not make room for a dish-wash machine.
Sometimes a poem will rise from the water
I jot it down quickly, less my memory falter.

The cat has been sick and the milk has gone off
and this morning, I woke with a terrible cough
but a pot plant I cherished, which I thought must have died
has opened a bud. Hoorah! It’s survived!
I’m glad that I took a moment to look,
Now, a nice cup of tea and a read of my book.

How went the day?
The day went well.

Sometimes, things seem too heavy to bear
and we may find relief in a short heartfelt prayer
but mostly these small gifts will lighten the load
and the choices we make set us on the next road.
Where worries and cares will pothole our path,
side-stepped by, ”I love you” and a small child’s laugh.

How went the day?
The day went well.

These magic moments turn dross into gold
as we span the adventure that is Life in this world.
We sink or we swim but what keeps us afloat
are the glimpses of magic; those moments of note.

Going to bed by the moon’s silver light,
I count all the gifts that have made my day bright.
What of tomorrow? No-one can tell.

How went the day?
The day went well.
