Human Cravings Poem by Venkateswaran Krishnan Sreenivasan

Human Cravings

Craving for the sweet has its genesis in the teat
Of the mother’s breast, a most loving treat
The charm is ingrained in the brain and the flesh
And lingers up to the grave afresh

Craving for sex is vexing in the least
It denigrates man to the realm of the beast
Crimes against women show an upward ascent
And cultural norms suffer a steep descent

Addicted to liquor, the victim gets hooked
And drunken driving gets him oft booked
Indicted by law court, he craves pardon
And replays the drama in gay abandon

Eminently well placed, yet craving for money
That is not akin to yearning for honey
Living in a tower, yet greedy for power
He extorts the laity by raining of favor

Smoking and doping are shortcuts to coping
Chosen by the hopeless victims for propping
Stopping these vices by counsel and mopping
Their tears is fruitful and wiser than sopping

Craving for revenge, a self consuming instinct
Base and blended in the genes makes humans distinct
From the brutes that kill and eat their prey
With hunger unlike spiteful humans who pray
