I think the knight errant's time has passed and only he does not recognize it. He is the medieval aristocrat, privileged as holder of power and killer, but now he has been replaced by modern society. He can still function as an archetypal figure, but he himself must withdraw from action on the stage of life. He doesn't belong anymore to the world of societal actions but rather to old books that still inspire young readers. He has become a symbol of a psychological figure of the past. He can only bustle in the real world as a Don Quixote figure - and break things
in his wayward motions as a man among men, just ordinary men, no longer the honored champion, resolving conflicts through violence. But what we need today are leaders imbued with pacifism and negotiation. Sorry, Roland: Rest in peace. Sorry, Achilles: in your next performance - you will be unarmed. And defeated. Join the hoi poloi.
