I, Alice Poem by Yasmin Hemmat

I, Alice

I, Alice, falling
down the rabbit hole,
down, down,
into the darkness.

The looking glass
reflects nothing,
not even my face.

The White Rabbit
has ceased to run.
Nothing can be late anymore,
for time itself
is dead.

In the garden,
the white roses
are stained with blood,
and the flowers
summon the dead.

The tea table lies deserted.
I search for the Mad Hatter,
only to find his hat upon my head
and his madness within me.

The Cheshire Cat has vanished;
only his smile remains.
And I, too,
have long since vanished
behind my own smile.

Down, down,
ever deeper...

Yet it is not I
who fall
down the rabbit hole;

it is the world
that crumbles
within me.
