I Am Poem by Thomas Ware

I Am

I operate under the theory
That I should be afraid of nothing.
Why?
Why should I be afraid of monsters?
Why should I be afraid of the dark?
How can I,
When I have faced the demons,
In my own head,
And won?

In the world you see rage and hatred and greed and callousness.
Most are not afraid of these,
By virtue of their being all around us.
Most are afraid of the creatures created,
Villains birthed by wicked minds,
Ghosts and spirits, shades and vampires.
But I have spawned far worse atrocities,
And merely hoped they not escape my mind.

I was afraid of the dark once;
But how can what lies out there,
Be worse then what crawls and gibbers inside?
