I Am Bonded Poem by Bheki Zungu

I Am Bonded

I am bonded
I am bound
Chains and shackles
Ropes and strings
Tying me down like a goat

Breathing I cannot
Moving I cannot
Loads of burdens
All over my shoulders

One lump sum
Disproportionate charges
Extended payback period
I own not what I have

Why am like this?
How did I get here?
Who will undo this bondage?
Opportunities pass me by
‘Cause I'm heavily tied up

Free me oh you heavenly powers
From this snare that entangles
Free me I beg of you
From this heavy burden towering over me
So my offspring can have a spring board
