I Am So Average! .....How Average Are You? Poem by Sandra Dodd

I'm average
I don’t hide it
I embrace it
Really it has not hindered me
I find it an asset around those
who think they are better
they tend to speak too much
when they think I cant
ascertain their simple meaning

I get by
despite what
the intellectuals think
we do okay
us average folk
we can use a dictionary and thesaurus.
Order a pizza,
even if it is just in English
not in Dutch, French and Spanish.
Talk our way out of a ticket.
Program our remotes without a hitch.
Get their car out of a ditch.


I wont be curing cancer
but if you get some
I could hold your hand
pat your brow
drive you to the doc
yes I could understand
his medical talk
then to the car
we would walk together

If your jet is so fast
you need to create
better fuel
I don’t think I will be helping
but when you solve that, fire it up
You would want me there
to start the party!
'cause the smart crowd can be stiffs
and some spirits I can lift

Won’t be solving world hunger
but face it
If the Dali Lama, Jesus,
and the others have not
a high IQ is not going to hit the spot

Some would look down on me
not knowing what
the quantum theory is really all about
understand the national debt in detail
how they really get the space shuttle down
how to graph the sentences in Lady of Shallot
solve international banking commerce

Why? I get through a day,
happy and spreading joy
I know the difference between
my lip gloss and my dental floss
how to make country look chic
I can size a person up
make you look hot for that date
a poem I can illustrate
how to order anything you want at the Starbucks fat free
When a joke is at your expense or for your joy
How to find million dollar red polish after discontinued
notice when you need some attention
at work give you honorable mention
tell you when your man is going to stray
invite you over so you wont be alone on the holiday

So no hating
don’t be elevating
one brain
over another
just love each other
value the you
you are today
Love your neighbor
as they say
