I Don't Know Poem by gordon nosworthy

I Don't Know

where to start
old blues knits a background
electric guitars sorting up and down
thru their bags of notes
while i sift thru dusty boxes of data
digging for collective wisdom
concerning what we should believe
to aspire to believe
less roads taken
than ones to be taken

it used to be so easy
to know right from wrong
to distinguish the right path
from that of the gutter
to allow myself to generate answers
rather than just reactions

now i'm not so sure
i still know how to breathe
so many of my destinations
weren't there when i arrived
first the journey began
really interesting sparking with potential
hope fills the belly
then touchdown and looking around
i didn't know where i was
i was hoping it was a lie
but it wasn't
everything was empty
and i wasn't sure of even that

where do i start
which way do i go
which box of data
do i rely upon
to open the rest of the boxes
i know which box is mine
this tells me a lot
i'm lost even when i'm not
