I gave you roses, you in turn gave truth
Too honest an exchange back in my youth
You sat me down too hard while I was blind
And cruelty was your way of being kind.
I knew nought of love and you somewhat more;
let me see what at times it holds in store
But came the day we laughed and said goodbye
I swear I saw a tear well in your eye.
You wore your certitude so well the day
you made your marriage vows and drove away
And later learned that lesson I recall
that truth casts thorny shadows on the wall.
I often wonder now what might have been
if you were then less wise and me, less keen.
