I Have Been Left Behind Poem by Emmanuel Arunee Mwanza

I Have Been Left Behind

I have been behind
I have been left behind
I have been determined
But I have been behind
I have been nice and worked hard
But I have been left behind
It wasn't that they could not see…they saw everything
Not to mention how badly I tried
But…behind, left, neglected….are the words
Words that makes a good summary of the years ahead of us
The years you and I have never been to but have thought it was cool
So easy I thought it was …
But wars came
My best men gone
My youths used as shield for the rich few
Leaving me behind
Watching and wishing
Things were better
My land turned upside down with bombs
I used to be beautiful among many
I used to have many things
I was rich but
They brought wars before my very eyes
For what?
Why?
For who?
Who was to benefit?
As parents lose their property
As little ones lose their parents
As the country lose its wealth
As the land lose its fertility
As children born are with deformities
As the people lose peace
Who benefits?
Why not look around and see me
See home much I tried
But I have been let down by greed of the people
I tried to make a life for my family, one parent could say
But I was neglected
I was looked down upon
As long as their wants were fulfilled
But for what?
I wish things were better
As I watch now
I can truly say
I have been behind
I have been left behind
I have been determined
But I have been behind
I have been nice and worked hard
But I have been left behind
I pray though that all the peoples realise
PEACE MATTERS
PEACE is what every one of them wants
So live in PEACE AND HARMONY
As for me I still hope for a better world
Though I have been left behind unattended as I would want
