I Keep Burning But In The Air Poem by Muhammad Suleman Khan

I Keep Burning But In The Air

Is it that I reach the state of ecstasy while shedding tears; or is it that I get demolished in moments of happiness? I am either a candle burning of its own flames or a moth oblivious of its destiny. Either way, I am burning needlessly in the air!

I make wings of my contemplation; learn flying from the bird; jump from an elevated land and start flying like a bird in the air!

My tears become the ink; my eyes the ink pots; my feathers the writing tools. Then I start writing poetry, yet again in the air!

During my flight, I see the clouds advancing from all sides. They also seem to be shedding tears for reasons unknown. I think of joining them and spreading, yet again in the air!

My thoughts are not perfect and so are my wings. I am afraid my weak wings may not force me to come down sometime, leaving my desired journey incomplete against my wishes. I am getting tired, yet in the air!

The air currents make me scared when the wind blows against my direction. I am afraid I may sometime get struck down. There is a constant fear till I keep flying in the air!

In the light of foregoing, if I ever decide to come down on the earth, I am oblivious of the fact that the Earth itself is not stationary. If ever I could realize that while living on the earth, I was constantly floating, but in the air!

Since the sunlight is traveling in the air; and so is the rain from the clouds shedding tears with me; I fear of becoming a rainbow swinging, yet only in the air!

So the fact of the matter is that this whole world is like a cradle swinging here and there and so are the people contained in it. Then why am I expected to stay calm at at a constant position while fluctuation and disparity seem to be the rule? And while I am in constant motion, yet in the air!

Or is it that I am the wandering dreams of a long night; Or the beautiful sounds of music; or the mere sound; or the mere thought? In all these cases, my medium is air and I constantly reside, but only in the air!

The story goes on. I reside in the air; so do you; and so does the time! When the resting place of everything lies in the air, how unwise of me it is to keep walking around with my nose in the air (proudly) .

Today I feel I that either my soul is submerging into Your world and Your signs are emerging from my own self. Either way, my soul is destined to travel, yet again in the air!

Khaki (soil) was only my worldly costume. If my soul set free, the body will turn into dust and fly, yet in the same air!
