I Know Not Poem by Adam Fuller

I Know Not

I know not e’en if in my heart
Your face is held in love’s esteem,
Or, as it seems to me, a beam
Between us keeps our lives apart.

I know not whether – if you yield–
I, also, would embrace my fate,
For this is but a flighty gate:
Not heart or fate, as yet, is sealed.

I should be speaking with the zeal
That has before enclosed my mind.
Not consciously have I resigned,
Yet deeper, it holds some appeal.

If, as I feared – and as I thought –
You seek to play another role,
Or if you can restore my soul –
The years will tell, for I know not.
