I Love You Poem by Ayotokunbo Ajewole

I Love You

I love you is more than mere words,
more than the lights and sounds,
more than the glee and glamour,
more than the date and the when,
the priest on the pulpit,
and the guests on the pew.

I love you is more than that very day,
when you say “I do”, and when they say “we are witnesses”,
when a new husband and wife is born,
when everybody just becomes happy and
when smiles overflow like water.
I love you is more than the couple of hours,
when a crowd become all well-wishers,
when the world seems so nice and people so friendly.

I love you is more than the marriage ceremony,
more than the gifts and the honeymoon.
I love you is more than the kids and the life that follow,
more than the friends and family members,
and all those who pop in when its time to cut a cake.

I love you is the one who’ll pick up your broken pieces in public,
and later put the puzzle back together in private.
I love you will care for you,
even when you don’t have yourself together anymore.
When the London bridge keeps falling down,
and falling down and falling down,
My fair Lady,
I love you will love not just for the occassion,
but for who you are and not where you are.

I love you will find where the shoe fits and where it hurts,
the balm is always at hand with a gentle rub.
I love will hear the pains you can’t express,
read the words you can’t write and
see the reality you long await for.
I love you will hold your hands and tell you what you need to hear,
to always make a brighter dawn and day.

I love you has the ears to listen when no one is there,
the friend amongst strangers and foes,
the one “who gat your back”,
who shares your plans for life and living.
I love you, sad when you’re sad,
happy when you’re happy.
He’ll trust you,
and let you know you’re trusted too.

I pray God gives me grace to love you daily,
and give you more to love me too.
