I Saw Light Poem by Patrick O'Reilly

I Saw Light

Hey, Mary, do you want something?
I’m going down to the Esso on the corner.
Won’t be too long, so you can brew a pot of coffee
I’m just going for a walk.

Sat himself down on a park bench
Besides a pretty blonde
In a black trench coat
Another big fight with his woman
Forgot to turn off the oven

I went down to the river tonight.
I heard music, and I saw light.

Heard a freight train leave the station
It made that angry racket that always kept him up
And it was starting to get colder
So he lit a smoke and just kept walking.

It was four in the morning when he stumbled in
To the bedroom and laid down beside her
The kettle still warm on the burner
But it ain't nothing that can't wait ‘til morning.
