I’ve Tried My Best Poem by Michael P. Johnson

I’ve Tried My Best

I’ve tried my best I’ve sung my song
My heart is full of love
I’m growing old, it won’t be long
Before I rise above

Yet how can I be Jesus’ queen?
Perfection’s not achieved!
I thought by now that I’d be clean
If I in Christ believed

I’ve served at home and foreign lands
To certain heights I’ve scaled
I’ve sought to follow God’s commands
But still somehow I’ve failed

The blood of Christ I’ve drank as wine
His flesh I’ve ate as bread
But why when Jesus’ truth is mine
Is still my flesh not dead?

So while I’m here I can but try
To reach perfection’s height
I’ll seek more gold from God to buy
And robe of Liquid Light

To find somehow my Lord to please
I’ll seek an open door
I’ll seek more oft on bended knees
To love my neighbours more

I’ve tried to serve God’s only Son
I’ve sought God’s word to share
What else on earth must still be done?
More fruit in Christ to bear

I’m pressing on to depths unknown
I hope to reach my goal
Through faith in Christ Life’s Corner Stone
I trust has saved my soul
