I Wake To The Dark Of A New Moon Poem by Shelly Stevens

I Wake To The Dark Of A New Moon

I wake to the
dark of a new moon
Knowing that
Morning is near
The house is
Cold and empty
In the kitchen
The frost will
Coat the insides
Of the window
And the metal
On the hinges
Will feel like ice
My toes curl
As I anticipate
The chill of
The terrazzo floors
And I think
Perhaps I could
Return to slumber
But then my
Mind takes hold
And coffee beckons
Whispering sweet words
From the cupboard
I smile as
I taste the
Heady black brew
And think of
The stale croissant
Sitting on the counter
And the sweet cream
Hiding in the fridge
