I Wish That It Were You Poem by John Yaws

I Wish That It Were You

I wish I had the words to say-
The things I feel for you.
'I love you' sounds so shallow,
But, my darling, it is true.

You have taken my heart captive-
With your laughter and your wit...
And knowing I can't have you-
Makes me want to hide and quit...

I long to hold you tightly-
And to kiss away your tears.
To shelter you beside me,
And to love away your fears.

To spend forever with you-
And to love you unto death...
And whisper your name softly,
With my final, mortal breath.

But wishing is for fools, they say.
I guess that may be true...
But if someone walks beside me,
I still wish that it were you.
