If I Could Have Stayed Poem by Lynn Grassette

If I Could Have Stayed

If I could have stayed completely immersed in your arms;
Surrounded entirely by your warmth;
Overwhelmed by the softness of your skin,
I would have.

If I could have stayed forever lost in your eyes;
Absolutely caught up in your smile;
And breathing perfectly in rhythm with your breath,
I would have.

If I could have stayed close, so damn close;
If I could have remained long enough to memorize every freckle,
Every scar, and every way you sparkle,
Babe, I would have.

If I could have stayed I’d never be second guessing,
Or in need of any reassuring,
Never pleading for anything else,
But everything you are.

For you are everything.

No babe, I didn’t stay.
I couldn’t stay.
But next time everything will end a different way.
