If Poetry Poem by Raymond Farrell

If Poetry

Rating: 5.0

If poetry
Is going to become
Truly relevant
In this chaotic world
It must be able
To impart meaning
With such force and clarity
That the readers
Will instinctively act
Upon what has been written
Just like a person
Upon having a 9 mm pistol
Aimed at their temple
Automatically
Hands over their purse.

I think not much hope, Ray: first read, then acted upon. Focuses the poet though.

If poetry is delivered orally by the poet, to the hearer, then the hearer has not read it. Furthermore, if meaning is imparted, it is assumed, the person either read what was written themselves, or it was read to them. Hopefully, if it is inspiring, they will act upon it. Sadly, as you wrote, there is not much hope of that happening.
