In My Mind Poem by Neeka Neekz

In My Mind

What can I say when I wasn’t given permission to talk?
What can I do when all you tell me is learn to creep before I walk?
What else is there to do, when nothing that I do pleases you?
What’s all the fussing about, when everyone is telling me to shut my mouth?
Haven’t you heard the news?
Brothers are fighting and killing each other over a pair of shoes
They slaughter us and plaster our faces; it’s all over the news
Running for our lives, they ran us down and call us fools
This is a fight that no one can win without getting hurt
They push us down, spit on us, and say we’re nothing but dirt
Just to repeat the words alone make my feelings hurt
We need to rise up and be strong
Let them know this will not last for long because
I’m a strong black woman also a born Jamaican.
