Insanity Poem by Richard Hughes

Insanity

I'm overcome by fear again
Why is that man here again?
I know he isn't there
But smoke fills the air

I'm sleeping with a blade again
In case he does invade again
But darkness does pervade again
My sanity, betrayed again

Maybe I deserve to die
For the horrors that grant me joy
I suppose I am easy to vilify
A mere cartoon, fun to destroy

Once again, I simply fall
Let go and begin to drop
Answering decay's sweet call
And basic life begins to stop

My clothes are all unlaundered
My body, weeks uncleaned
My teeth won't be brushed today
My odour is obscene

But all of this can be disguised
And where it can't, one can rely
On politeness of the civilized
When one does plausibly deny

A red mist descends beyond my gaze
And now I just can't seem to see
How can I escape this haze?
With this tool, I'll set me free

Wildly swirling through the air
The colours dance in frightful beauty
Share thee now in my despair
Or in my predestined duty

Forcing colour upon the world
I paint with my metal brush
Beauty once again unfurled
And matched by a sanguine hush

A message carved in blood
