It Takes Two To Make A Fight Poem by Francis Duggan

It Takes Two To Make A Fight

'Tis said your enemy at present might be your future friend
Some say there is truth in those words whilst others say 'just a crock of wind'
That those not with you are against you that's how 'twill always be
That the enemy you have today will remain your enemy.

We often choose an enemy on the day we make a friend
For there can be great bitterness when a friendship comes to an end
And our enemy of the future can be our friend of today
Us humans are strange creatures and we've always been that way.

I asked a wise man once about mateship and he looked me in the eye
Saying for the answer to that question ask one wiser than I
My friends back in my schoolgoing days as my friends did not remain
And for every friend that I have lost a new friend I did gain.

Those not with me are against me with those words I do not agree
For that sounds a petty attitude or so 'twould seem to me
In any disagreement anyone is not entirely wrong
To apologize is not weakness 'tis a fortress of the strong.

'Tis said your enemy of tomorrow may be your friend of today
Us humans are strange creatures and we've always been that way
And in any disagreement one is not entirely right
For there is two sides to every story and it takes two to make a fight
