It Was Supposed To Be... Poem by Elizabeth Dorn

It Was Supposed To Be...

It started out as a job,
A way to support my family,
My wife said 'No'
But I knew I had to go.
I wanted to be the hero
I wanted to be a star
But I never thought it would be like this
I never thought I might die.
It was supposed to be an adventure
It was supposed to be a new thing to try
I didn’t want to kill them, Suz
But my life was on the line.
I thought I wouldn't feel it,
But boy! Was I wrong
I haven't slept in days Suz,
I haven't slept at all.
Look after our little boy Suz,
Make sure he grows big and tall,
If I'm not back by New Years,

I fear I'll have lost it all.
