Jersey; A Beauty's Secret Poem by James Asher

Jersey; A Beauty's Secret

The rugged unconquered beauty that is an Island green
Ensconced, with her cousins, in the temporal embrace of Neptune’s realm
Whose radiant splendour can only be compared to a seraphim’s smile.
Has, from me, hidden the secrets of her natural grace and incandescent green,
I, who had not been smitten by her precious jewelled beauty,
Have awoken; from a self inflicted slumber, and a diet of absence;
Am now hypnotised by her radiance, her charm and her majesty
I, though poor in standing, am proud of Jersey, my Island green, my Home.

But a dark unspoken vice, lies deep in the midst of our Island green
Ensnared, like all others, in the trait of human malevolence.
She hides her inglorious self in the shadows of the unseen
Where, she ply’s her trade in misery, in decadence, in violence.
She delivers fictitious hope to those who suffer, a mirage
Of neon light injected against the grey cold reality of life.
A whisper of true pretence, a cry of lies, a barrage
Of indifference from those who happily live without strife.

She invites the reaper amongst their decayed souls, he glides
A silent shadow, and from this world their souls depart.
She doesn’t care that it’s a mother’s child. In tragedy hides
The truth of their wanton demise, she has no soul, no heart,
No tears. This Island child is delivered from their hell at least,
But how can one compare an Island in beauty with that of a beast.
