Johnny Poem by Neso Onyeuche

Johnny

It was Monday when it happened,
I was new at our school.
Longer hair before you cut it,
your old style was really cool.

I was sitting front and center,
you were standing right behind
till you perched yourself adjacent
to me, with a friendly smile.
You said 'hi, my name is Johnny! '
And I told you mine in kind.

It was Monday when it happened,
Monday morning, years ago.
When a random boy called Johnny
smiled at me and made it so
that my frantic visage calmed,
that my quaking fingers stilled,
that sweet warmth displaced my chill,
and i marveled at the skill

with which aimless angel Johnny
(no agenda in his mind)
made my anxious morning tolerable
just by being kind.

Now, to critics
sorely thinking
that the johnnies are too few
and the people
bravely trying
to embody kindness too
I suggest when next you're seeing
someone seeming slightly blue
toss a smile in their direction,
thinking:

What Would Johnny Do?
