Jonny Found A Thousand Rupee Note Poem by Prayash Gupta

Jonny Found A Thousand Rupee Note

Jonny was on his way to School
Late, as usual
Speeding his steps now and then
Walking fast, in fact, running
Tensed
Else, he might be subjected to scolding
And punishment,
As he had already become a sample piece
to get regular punishment in his class.
On his way,
A black cat crossed the road,
He thought it might be another bad day for him.
So, he crossed his finger
And moved ahead faster.

Finally,
He reached in front of the school gate,
The warning bell rang
But he stood still.
He heard the bell
Still, it was Heard-unheard
In his ears,
As his eyes fell
On a thousand rupee note
That was lying
Only a few steps forward.
He was thrilled-
The thought of School,
Class or Assembly was out of his mind.
He was happy,
Now he thought.
How he is going to
Pick it up,
But
It could be a copy note, he thought again.
"But to give up, without checking it out
would be a foolish thing to do, " thought his bad self.
"Again to pick up somebody's money
Is against the morality, " thought his good self.
"But to let it go would be the most foolish thing, " thought the bad side.
"What if someone finds me picking up the money, " thought the better self.
"Come on, move forward, else you'll lose the money, " insisted the bad side.
In the mental battle
Between the good and the bad,
The negative carried more impact
So
Hesitantly,
He moved his trembling step forward
And yet
Another step,
He was just two steps
Away from his day's fortune-
No sooner, he took another step,
One man rushed in front of him,
Faster than Cheetah
And picked up the money.
He was disappointed, energy less
And frowned his face at utter desperation,
As he was so close to his day's fortune,
Yet, all was lost at the last stage.
He thought
If I had picked it up
A second earlier
That thousand-rupee note
would be inside my pocket.
He cursed the black Cat and came back to his sense.
He was at the school gate and
Could listen to the voice of his teacher
Instructing him to come fast.
He prepared himself
For another series of scolding,
But before he stepped forward
Turned his face towards the man who had picked up the money,
To his surprise,
He found no man but the same note lying on the road.
Strange happiness reigned on his troubled-stressed mind
As he perceived the note was not a real one.
Again, a little boy picks up the note and moves forward.
He smiled at the upcoming reversal of fortune of the recent gainer.
He laughs but instantly recalls his present situation
And steps forward for the day's punishment.
