Just Like A Dog Poem by Eva Pepa

Just Like A Dog

I love like a dog.
It's silly, I know,
to compare my emotions with that of a wagging tail,
but it's much more than that.
I love like a dog.
I will love you like a dog loves a warm summer day.
I can be as loyal as a dog to their owner
who saved them from the speeding cars of the street.
I'll try so hard to make you smile,
just like a dog doing tricks for a treat.
I will wait for you at the door.
It may sound nice, but it's not.
Even when the summer turns into a harsh winter
that freezes the air in my lungs,
I will still try to let you know how much I can love you.
Even when you try to rehome me,
I think I will still always choose you.
Even when the treats you feed me are laced with poison,
I will still want to see you smile.
When the door closes,
I think I'll be waiting for you for a while.
Claw marks will be torn into the walls.
I would wonder, Why would you leave me?
But it really doesn't matter anymore.
My tail started wagging again, but not because you came back.
