JUST MY SHADOW AND ME
Though I toil the whole day long in this hot burning sun, I don't think of my troubles; it's the atmosphere.
But when the sun goes down and that moon comes up, it's the loneliest night of the year.
With you, I seldom ever ate alone but now at night, I'm all alone and I scarcely ever eat.
Then I walk the streets with measured steps, there's no one there but my shadow and me.
The house is all dark, the TV never plays, no one to say good morning, no one to kiss goodnight.
Not a smile do I see nor a hug do I feel or your sweet voice to say everything'll be alright.
Since you went away, the nights are so long and lonely and I can't see a chance for adaptability.
So up and down the streets we walk 'til the moon is low, all alone, it's just my shadow and me.
My shadow can't speak nor does he have a name but I've told him all about you.
Now and then I turn to him only to see him in agony, suffering as much as me.
I've told him over and over how you went away and those that say you have a better life.
With heartache so great, I know you won't be back and now, it's just my shadow and me.
I told my shadow all you left me was one small photograph and a million, million memories,
then I glanced in his direction only to see him weeping 'cause you left with no apologies.
He never runs, but walks as though he's heavy-hearted and just keeps in step with me.
Like it or not, as long as we live, we're in this same ole hurt together, just my shadow and me.
I've told him about those many, many years we loved and lived for one another,
then each time I turn to him I notice him wiping his tears as he has for so many nights.
Each night we walk, the pain is worse and heartaches are just another blockbuster,
But together we walk, night after night after night forever, just my shadow and me.
It's wasn't your fault that you left me, but that handsome young stranger were you lured,
Promising you a mansion on the other side of heaven, but now I'm left alone and tortured.
You were the most beautiful woman this side of heaven and never lost your apogee,
But now alone we walk these streets at night, as every night, just my shadow and me.
