Just One More Game Poem by Dennis Flint

Just One More Game

We played this game on a table with a little white ball
No mercy I smashed it and it reached the wall

I beat him twenty one nil, then beat him twenty games in a row
But if his spirit was broken it didn't show

I smashed it and thrashed him but he came back for more
'Enough now, lets go' I moved for the door

'No wait' he said and called out my name
'Lets play one more, just one more game'

So I turned back and we played what I thought was one more
But he said 'one more game' until we played four

And then came this one, it was nineteen all
I smashed it but this time it didn't reach the wall

It came back too clever and then a winner, I was done
His arms raised in triumph, he'd done it, he'd won

His arms raised in triumph but he asked me to tell
'Did you play badly or did I play well'?

'The truth is my friend that much as I care
That was my best, you won fair and square

I have a new rival now called Grief and its sadistic new game
It kicks me and it wakes me, it just whispers a name

They say Grief's your friend but it isn't my kind
Its game is one sided and it frigs with my mind

But come back tomorrow and beat me again
And the day after that bring on your pain

A knot in my stomach, tears in my eyes
Down on my knees but I'm going to rise

You may as well leave as it's all in vain
But before you go, just one more game

One day I will beat you, no empty vow
My young friend called David showed me how

Your catchphrase to life 'Just one more game'
Arms raised in triumph, your indelible name
That game that you won behind closed doors
Now and forever my silent applause.

I like the way that the battle with grief is introduced unexpectedly in the middle of the poem... I have a new rival now called Grief..., great verse. Also the way that your spirit is not going to be defeated. My poem 'What If' has a similar theme.
