Just To See Him Poem by Paul Warren

Just To See Him

The swinging doors were apart
The doctors had attempted their art
But that was done and had failed
Nothing more all effort now curtailed

Through the doors I entered then
To his last fight lost in the end
They had opened his chest to stop the bleeding
A real battle to repair his heart so needing

But they had not counted on two wounds
To the top and bottom of his heart doomed
His wife heard the terrible news
And knew what it meant to lose

She wanted to see him before they took him away
So I went to see there was a possible way
Entering there was just a drip sound
A soundtrack to a scene brought me down

I looked at him laid out that way
Chest opened up where clamps held sway
And the dripping continued a soundtrack fine
No more or less just marking time

There was blood sprayed all around
And I focussed then on the dripping sound
From the side of his table I saw
Blood dripping down an insane score

There was no way for her to see
Her beloved now no life left to be
So I left to tell her about it
To see him later when things would fit.
