Keep Your Fingers Crossed Poem by Alejandro Torres

Keep Your Fingers Crossed

Keep your fingers crossed
And your eyes closed
Maybe the viper wont strike
Maybe you wont be as deadly this time
Than the first
Maybe Gods need to fall
Before they become wise
And the beings of legend
Maybe we all need to lose
Every once in a blue
But, love, I don’t want to lose you
A second time when the first
Was nearly enough
To burn out the light of a hundred angels
There were always a few things
I never let you know
But maybe now is the time
To come clean
There was once a sun
Who was replaced by your smile
There once was a moon
Who was replaced
By your profile
There were once mountains
But I did what I could to move them
With the failing strength of words
They were your boundaries
I did what I could to get over them
To reach you
There once used to be rain
But I never had to face the guilt
Of watching it fall
They would have been tears
And though you’ve told me I’ve caused them
They were happy
You once told lies
But I let them go
Like ghosts in the night
There once was happiness
But without you here there is none
I once questioned the existence of love
And then I met you
And then I knew there was a reason
My heart quivered in fear
In anticipation
In devastation
I met you and knew
There was a reason
For love
