Keeper Poem by Eli J Tod

Keeper

Words in anger
Spoken

Swift, smooth
Quicksilver lethal

Eroding the bonds of friendship
That were meant to last forever.

False smiles
Clown-like lips

Going through the familiar
Friendly act.

Eyes
Betray agitation

Cynical and suspicious.

Friendship
Is depending on

The other
To keep close to their heart

Secrets
Ideas

Confessions
Wrapped up in

Giggles and smiles
On the foundation of
Trust.

Betrayal
Swift and silent.
Snipers sights
Well aimed
Directly to the heart

Worn arrogantly upon my sleeve
Now sealed tight
Buried
Six feet under.

Never
Shall there be
Shame
On me

The lesson
Well learned,
The first time.

I gave you my heart
Happily
Without a thought

Or care.
Only after
Did I realize
That only

I
Can be
The keeper
Of my heart.
