Lay Me Down Poem by Richard Trembath

Lay Me Down

May my resting place be
At the foot of a tree;
A tall, strong tree
By the river's edge
Where the stream flows quiet
By the rocks and sedge.

Lay me down there
Near the south-east verge,
Which catches the rays
At the break of day
And the warmth of the sun
In its westward path
‘Til the daylight wanes
And the shadows play
As the dark approaches
In fading light
And the bushland creatures
Withdraw from sight.

When all is quiet
Save the zephyr breeze
That lazily wafts
Through the riverbank trees,
The occasional sound of
Wings in the night
As a night-bird
Quietly takes to flight.

And I will lie resting
At peace with all,
As the world greets the rays
Of tomorrow's dawn.
