Leader Poem by Diptesh Augustine Sarkar

Leader

They too are leaders
but their feet rest on corn
and not soft buckskin of
a scant virgin.

They sleep on forest's musty cushion
to cold, rain and pest
wearing slander like prophets
from those who they fight for
on petty morsels
or even without.

They too are leaders
when they laugh
the woods blush like a bride
when they fall
crickets still the night.
