Lend Me Your Ear Poem by Rebecca Dobson

Lend Me Your Ear

what is god, if i cannot reach out and touch him?
what is faith if it does not restore my hope, nor calm my fears?
what is love, if i do not welcome or desire it?
what is future if my fear overwhelms my dreams?
what is medicine when it's sickness oozes into every corner of your life?

i want to melt this block of ice that entombs me
i want my soul to burn away this frozen shield and set me free
i want my will to lead me and teach me perseverance and control
i want to cast off this tiny icy cube and all the power it has on me
discard the chill that saps my emotion, numbs my spirit
erodes my lust

what is happiness if i pain to find it?
what is high when the ground is cold and hard?
what is tomorrow when today means nothing?
what is family when they do not know me?
what is freedom when you are trapped in your own mind?
what is beauty, when that repulsive mirror shows you hideous and vile?
what is youth when you cannot feed yourself at ninety?
what is life if you do not live?
