Like A Rule Poem by Anisha Nyambe

Like A Rule

how many times do we dare to abide by the rules?
just to act normal for once and not appear to be fools.
and yet again, some rules are meant to be broken
and some broken hearts must be kept as a token
to show how we failed to pay memory fines
and to show how we fail to color within the lines
and so, we break rules to look cool
and color outside so the painting looks full
after that, what more's left to do
if all wrong things are linked to you?
how many times do we choose to abide by the rules?
just to be proud of looking as though we are fools
how many a time do we fail to pay memory fines
or choose to fail to color within the lines?
all to make the painting look full
like a rule.
