Like You Said Poem by Alejandro Torres

Like You Said

Did you ever think
At any point in time
That I’d look back
On the words you once told me
Though only a small fraction
Of every word we shared
Did it ever cross your mind
That letting you back in
Might kill me
You once said you’d cry
So would you?
Still?
How could you not figure
Simple lines as truth
That the love I had for you
Could overcome your deception
You said you’d never break my heart
Daily was your formula for fidelity
Through the smiles and tears
I’ve been faithful
When the Gods themselves
Pity me
Do you think you could once again
Love me
Like you thought you could
When we were younger and foolish
Or would you gladly
Set me back on your path
To placing that gun of love
Of yours
To my temple
Have you already taken the five bullets
You said you would
Would your arms cradle me
On the trip home
After recovery from you
Like you said they would
Or as I lay drowning
Would your lips touch mine
For one first and last farewell
I’d always grant you
Even though letting you back in
And knowing
That the deception you carry with you
Hurts worse
Than letting you go
For good
Like you said
I should
