The velvet hush of passing Day
Tiptoes where the mourners stay—
A hymn half-whispered, soft and small,
As shadows lean against the wall.
The coffin, like a secret, sleeps
While time, in measured cadence, creeps;
And lilies bow, as if they know
The earth receives what we let go.
No trumpet calls, no raucous cheer,
Just trembling hearts, and one thin tear;
The sky, a pale and watchful guest,
Cradles sorrow in its breast.
And yet, beyond the mourning door,
A quiet hum—an evermore;
For death, though solemn, still imparts
A whisper folded in our hearts.
