Little Angels Poem by Kewal Paigankar

Little Angels

On a warm summer’s day
Little angels; you asked me to play
With you both
Running the length and breadth of the garden
Until we could run no more
Tired and aching
I could barely walk
The following day while you were
Eager to run even more.

Little angels; enjoy your childhood
Bask in the glory of you infancy
The innocence and the mischief
The joy of your company
That we hold so dear
Lasting for an eternity.

But it is only momentary
Adolescence and adulthood beckon
Along with a myriad traumas and stresses.
Soon we would be old and wrinkled
You would have lost your innocence
As you step out into the world
To make your mark.

Think of how we would rest
After each lap
I would read from a book
While you listened, intent;
We talked about nature and the universe
Animals and the birds;
You were fascinated by the ant
Its purpose and diligence.
I taught you to respect all life
You acknowledged and became aware
With a maturity beyond your years
Your place in the evolution of man
In that instance of awakening.

So grow up fast, little angels
We await your progress.
Enhance the world
Make it a better place
While building a niche
For yourselves.
Remember the lesson you learned
On that idyllic summer’s day
You nodded and smiled.
