Kewal Paigankar Poems

I am only a leaf
One of nature’s fragile things.

Walk gently past me
...

They call it the magic train
Ambling gently into station
It has been a long ride
Through the parched desert of Rajasthan
...

Behind the bar she waits
Half in darkness and half in light
Solitary and detached
An alluring vision, composed and assured
...

The ferryman waits on board
For the final voyage
By the battered vessel
Permanently Crocked.
...

The Sea Widow

Stirring inside her womb
Evolving, gestating
...

Two Winters

Trudging through the snow
Frequently slipping
...

They came out in droves
Even in a small town such as this
To commemorate the MAN
Who swam with the whales.
...

SHARED MOMENTS

People are asking me
If there is something going on
...

CRACKED GLASS

She waits
...

Let us salute this man.
The old codger is gone
Alive no more;
Struck down by illness and old age
...

Through the night I travel
The enveloping darkness closing in
The dread of turbulence
That rocks the plane up and down.
...

If only I could fly!

I would hit a 40-yard pass
And watch it soar
...

A whiff of pungent air
At once corrupt and contagious
Spreads throughout these corridors
Of the citadel
...

In the gallery of the grotesque
Theatre of the absurd
In the chamber of fools
Where clowns sit, smirking and pompous
...

Made from granite, Rosendale cement and limestone
Connecting Manhattan to Brooklyn
The East River over which it stands
Moonlit and serene tonight
...

On a warm summer’s day
Little angels; you asked me to play
With you both
Running the length and breadth of the garden
...

I first saw you
Hung from the ceiling
Held together by steel rods
Filling a cavernous room
...

A retired magician has defaulted on the terms of his contract. Now two underworld figures are on his trail..........

Welcome to the world of magic and illusion
...

She is kindness personified.
She wears it lightly
On her sleeve
This slightly incongruous woman
...

History is being written
Its pages cannot be torn
Not even by the Gods
Who aid or obstruct
...

Elegy For A Leaf

I am only a leaf
One of nature’s fragile things.

Walk gently past me
As I lie on the pavement
Shivering in the cold of winter
And autumn’s downpour;
I only have a few hours left
Before a heavy foot treads on me
Not letting me live just a little longer
But that is Man’s nature.

I once hung proudly
At the end of a branch
Of the mighty oak
Seemingly safe from danger
Until that stormy night
The hurricane shearing the tree
Scattering me and the others
Across the southern counties
Lifting and throwing us
Until we could suffer no more.

So don’t step on me just yet
I am already hurt.
The fall snapped my stem
Leaving me gasping for breath
As the pain gets stronger
And my resistance weakens.

Don’t snatch the cusp of life
Away from me for now
Allow me to draw one last breath
Before a size 13 boot heads my way
Strident, powerful and remorseless
With a smug look on its sole.

I am just a leaf
Delicate and wondrous
One of nature’s fragile things……….
