Little Girl! Poem by Mehreen Tahir

Little Girl!

Little girl,
She dances away.
With a spring in her step,
She would run around the trees,
And peek around the bushes,
Chase after the butterflies,
And pick flowers for her basket,
Her tiny feet would hug the green grass,
And gentle smile would light up the sky,
When crossing the pond she would always stop,
And talk to the frogs, all green and brown,
The garden would await this happy little guest,
Little girl,
She dances away.
Today the garden lies empty,
Dark and gloomy,
The grass has turned yellow,
And flowers sagged away,
Drooping in the shadows,
The butterflies are flying away,
And the pond drying up,
With the last few frogs croaking,
Waiting for their princess,
The garden is a sad sight,
No more the bounty it was,
The creaking gates left open,
Waiting for the saviour to return,
Little girl,
She has danced away!
